Welcome to our home, The Hill House Bed and Breakfast
(click for Rates)and grant based writers retreat (click for policies).
My husband Ron and I are currently fulltime writers. We live on
a thirty-four acre farm1 ½ hours south of Nashville, outside
the sleepy town of Pulaski, TN.
When I first considered buying the farm, I wasn't
seeking a writer's retreat. I was seeking a homestead. The land
was gorgeous. The farm was amazing: rolling hills with a constant
breeze. It had two ponds, natural springs, fruit trees, pasture,
garden, and studio; but there was this whole downstairs area that
had its own kitchen. I kept asking, "What am I going to do
with all those rooms?" If you write anything like I do, you
may have experienced a unique creative phenomena: when you ask the
universe a question, you will get an answer.
Formerly a retirement home, and later the Y2K house
of dreams of author Michael Hyatt (The Millennium Bug) The house
was shouting "Writers and Artist retreat!!" Although Ron
and I had, in the past, attended numerous writers' conferences and
MFA residencies, it was the personal retreat where I had once rented
a little cottage on a monastery for three days, and the bed and
breakfast that we stayed at in Italy that had nurtured us the most.
Whether it be ourselves (yes, sometimes we need
to nurture ourselves) our kids, women, men, artists, writers or
songwriters; one of our simple delights in life has always been
to support the creative expression in those around us. We have always
been impassioned with the desire to assist others on the creative
path- because we know how hard it can be. We also know that when
starting a new project it helps to be nurtured into the experience.
Hence our motto: When breakfast is served, you write!
Come join us, apply for the grant and find you own way to the hill.
KAREN WALASEK Prop.
In Native American religions: "The Hill is the place where
you go to vision quest. Literally, it could be a hill or in a valley
or in a sweat lodge or by a stream - wherever you go to fast and
pray at the same time. Not all people call it vision quest - some
call it fasting. But the purpose is prayer, solitude, finding out
who you are or what the creator has called for you to do in your
life next or in the future. Going on The Hill is taking the time
to do these things. Turning back to the hill is the same as choosing
to live your life in a way that is in line with the creator's purpose
for you and committing yourself to finding what that is." -
