Originally a stationary retreat that served sustainable gourmet to its guests for writing in isolation in the hills of southern Tennessee, Hill House Writers, having now grown into a community of mentors who intimately understand the writing process, are pleased to announce the genesis of a new and exciting opportunity—our ongoing writer’s retreat series—Hill House’s Movable Feast!
Of his internship years, Hemingway said, “If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for Paris is a movable feast.” In religious terms a movable feast is a holiday that happens every year but might fall on a different calendar day from year to year. At Hill House Writers we mean both. Our movable feast will now take advantage of a variety of place-based spaces to nurture your creative spirit such as the evergreen forests and waterfalls on Mt Hood in Oregon, not far from the literary hub of progressive Portland, “the city that works”, and home to the infamous Powell’s books. Hemingway knew that no writer lives without context. His community of writers and mentors in Paris shaped him and his approach to living and writing for the rest of his life. Stay with us for a week and allow yourself to be shaped by the experience, so that you, too, find sustenance for your journey with writing. Hill House’s movable feast offers a community of academically trained professional writers without the baggage or cost of a modern higher education. We say ‘without baggage’ because you are free to explore elements of living the writer’s life that might not normally be covered in the graduate environment. With the Movable Feast, you are free to pick and choose from an a la carte style workshop experience while working on the writing of your choice. However, for those in need of, or wishing to pursue Credit toward Continuing Education, look no further, we can accommodate you as well! At Hill House’s Movable Feast, you will be afforded a one of a kind experience of immersion. You will be with writers and mentors who share your passion for words, who understand the difficulties (and elations!) of the job. And, in this same spirit of community and mentorship, the Movable Feast stays with you. Once home, you will engage in a three month correspondence with your writing mentor, in which you will share both your creative work and creative process and receive feedback and support from your mentor as you weave what you gleaned from the retreat into your own writing life. We invite you to join us for a life-changing, word-making event.
