Sample Writer’s Retreat Schedule

  • Arrive Friday night – Leave Saturday the following week
  • Fly into Portland International. Possible shuttle bus available or car rental deals (which can be prearranged).
  • Prior to arrival, the syllabus would be sent out and people would be expected to bring books, computers and/or pads and pencils. We will provide local networking and printing. Probably Internet.
  • There will be no meals Friday, just snacks, tea and coffee (which should always be available). People are encouraged to bring their own alcohol.
  • Prior to admission all students need to sign waivers. And letters of agreement.
  • Each person will fill out a food survey. Menus are created around student’s needs. We will strive to accommodate food preferences (there are no guarantees) but we will make every attempt. This information has to be into us with an application and deposit at least one month prior to the start.
  • Advisors should be assigned before the attendees arrive, based on writing style and needs and genre.

Saturday

Breakfast 7:30 – 8:30

First morning get-together 9 – 10

This one hour session will be a presentation of the program in full, introduction of all advisors and plugs for workshops. Will also include key points:

  • Descriptions of extra activities and guest presentations.
  • Description of the salon concept and student/faculty/guest readings
  • How the kitchen works
  • Rooms and special needs.
  • Study plans (I may call this a contract or agreement rather than a plan)
  • The 15 week follow up
  • Publication in the Writer’s Retreat journal (which could possibly include some student involvement)
  • Extra focus workshops (these will be living the writer’s life type deals that include social media, blogs, e publishing, submissions, working with an editor or agent, staying organized, writing spaces and habits, etc.

Advising Sessions 10:35 – noon (break for lunch) 1:15 – 3PM

Break up into advisor groups either several round table groups in one room or each group in a separate room. These groups will take up the lion share of organized time at the retreats.

Free writing time 3 to 5

Dinner 5:30 – 7PM

Evening event reading movie or presentation – 2 – 3 hours


Sunday – Friday

Personal devotional – yoga, jogging, running, etc. 6 – 7

Breakfast 7:30 – 8:30

Workshop 9 – 10 (could go longer)

All students can attend. One of our advisors will create a workshop and present it. We should coordinate with each other so that we are sure to cover the basic elements of writing (following some of the basic elements of fiction).
